Our policy position on fixing the challenges facing communities in Ghana's lithium mining catchment areas.
As Ghana's first lithium mine moves from approval into active operation at Ewoyaa, the communities in its catchment area face many of the same risks that have played out around other resource projects — unclear compensation, slow resettlement, and limited local benefit from the jobs and revenue the project creates. This paper sets out what meaningful relief for these communities should look like.
Land and livelihood compensation should be settled transparently and on a clear timeline, not left open-ended while families wait.
Catchment communities should see direct, lasting benefit from the project through local employment, skills training and community investment — not just short-term payouts.
